Write Your Emails Backwards for Better Responses

The post says email responses improve when the message is concise, direct, and easy to understand at a glance. If the reader has to work through a long explanation to find the point, the message is likely to be skipped, deleted, or archived.

It recommends writing emails “backwards” by putting the action, request, or most important information in the first line. Any supporting detail should come after that, so the recipient immediately knows what is being asked and can respond more easily.

#

  • Short and clear emails are more likely to be read and answered.
  • If the issue needs a long explanation, email may be the wrong medium.
  • The main request or question should be the first line of the message.
  • Supporting details should come after the request, not before it.
  • Even informational emails should start with the one thing the reader should take away.
