Why Your Links Should Never Say “Click Here”

The page argues that “click here” weakens link usability because it directs attention to mouse mechanics instead of the interface or the user’s task. It also says “here” hides what the link is about, slows scanning, and makes multiple links harder to tell apart.

  • “Click” shifts attention to the mouse and away from the interface and content.
  • A task-related verb keeps users focused on what they are trying to do.
  • “Here” conceals the destination and forces users to read surrounding text for context.
  • Repeated “here” links are hard to distinguish and require recall.
  • Link styling should already make links noticeable through contrast in color or shape.
  • Link nouns are better than vague verbs because they show what users will get.
  • Link specific titles or names instead of generic words like “article” or “book.”
  • Putting the linked noun at the end of the sentence makes the link easier to spot.
