Why I work remotely (hint: it has nothing to do with productivity).

Remote work gives the author room to live around his day, not only around his job. He can spend time with his children before and after school, work from a favorite coffee shop, travel to meet his team, help a friend, walk his dogs, and care for a sick child without taking a sick day.

He argues that the value of working from home is to welcome interruptions instead of treating them as obstacles. He wants to stop for conversations with his son, make his daughter a snack, and remember those moments. He says he barely remembers the years when he worked a day job and freelanced all night, and that being home to be interrupted is something to appreciate.

Reading notes
#

  • Remote work lets him do ordinary family and personal things during the day, including breakfast, snacks, errands, dog walking, team visits, and caregiving.
  • He suggests embracing interruptions instead of focusing only on home-office productivity advice.
  • He describes choosing to be present when his son comes to his office and when his daughter comes home hungry.
  • He says those small interactions are the ones he and his children will remember.
  • He contrasts that with the years when he worked a day job and freelanced all night, which he barely remembers.
