What is a Systems Map?

A systems map is presented as a tool for making sense of complex systems such as cities, hospitals, and schools. It lays out the relationships and interactions between stakeholders in a system, so people can see the bigger picture and identify where they want to learn more or experiment.

Deirdre Cerminaro says mapping can help spot opportunities for growth and change. In the example of a public high school experience, the map can include obvious stakeholders like teachers, principals, and coaches, as well as less obvious ones like social media influencers and the local school board. The point is to connect the parts, then ask what influences the experience and where there are gaps.
