We become the tools of our tools

00:28:38 — We Become the Tools of Our Tools

The host articulates a Thoreauvian insight: we become in a strange way what we pay the most attention to, and prolonged immersion in screen-based technologies causes us to internalize their rhythms and biases. We begin to mirror the tools we use, losing the distinctly human patterns of thought and relation in the process. This is framed as the beginning of agency’s erosion — not a dramatic loss of freedom, but a gradual drift in which our attention, and therefore our character, is quietly colonized by the technologies we thought we controlled.

“We become in a strange way what we pay the most attention to.”

“We start to reflect the rhythms and the biases of those technologies — we become the tools of those tools.”

“That is the beginning of the erosion of our agency.”
