Visual Studio on an ultra-wide monitor
The post describes several Visual Studio layouts for ultra-wide monitors. It shows setups that leave room for the app being built, place tool windows around documents, move tool windows into columns, and combine those layouts with full screen mode.
Reading notes#
- Ultra-wide monitors are wider than a traditional 16:9 display, usually 3440×1440 or larger, and the post uses screenshots from developers to suggest layouts for that extra space.
- One layout gives Visual Studio two thirds of the width and keeps the app being worked on in the remaining space, with vertical tabs and Error List and Output Window docked side by side.
- Another layout keeps tool windows on both sides and at the bottom while still leaving room for two vertical tab groups and two documents visible at once.
- A third layout moves bottom tool windows to the right so two documents can sit side by side at full height, with code in the center and supporting tool windows on each side.
- Full screen mode hides tool windows and toolbars, and the post says Solution Explorer can still be shown with View -> Solution Explorer.
- Saved Window Layouts lets you save different layouts and switch between them later, which helps when undocking a laptop or changing layouts by solution type.
- The post also points to Windows 11 PowerToys, FancyZones, and the Tweaks extensions, which add more window-arrangement options and an Open on the Side command in Solution Explorer.
- The author mentions an open feature request to save vertical and horizontal tab orientation with window layouts.
