The Power of Less: Changing Behavior with Leo Babauta

Tim Ferriss introduces Leo Babauta, whose Zen Habits blog grew from one reader (his wife) into a top-100 Technorati blog in under a year, while Babauta quit smoking, lost 40 pounds, went from non-runner to marathoner, and paid off his debt. Ferriss excerpts the method from Babauta’s book The Power of Less.

  • The method rests on tackling one habit per month rather than several at once, so all effort concentrates on a single change.
  • A written plan names the daily goal, the trigger that precedes it (an existing routine the new habit attaches to), and who will hear about the results.
  • The plan is posted publicly, to a forum or to family and coworkers, before the challenge starts.
  • Progress gets reported daily to that same group, whether the day succeeded or not.
  • Ferriss adds a note from BJ Fogg’s Stanford research: teaching someone two new behaviors at once (like a habit plus a new tool) tends to fail. One change at a time holds.
