Fala de Mendoza no Ato IV de Man and Superman (1903). Mendoza é o bandido na sequência espanhola da peça e, no sonho de John Tanner que ocupa o terceiro ato, reaparece como o Diabo no inferno onde Tanner debate com Don Juan e o Statue.

A formulação tem precedente em Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892), Ato III: “In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.” Shaw conhecia a peça e a frase de Wilde. As duas versões circulam intercambiadas; Shaw é a versão “two tragedies in life”, Wilde a versão “in this world”.
