Under ecological pressure, the flaw in Marx’s own positive vision becomes visible. Communism, as he imagined it, kept the engine of capitalism — ceaseless expanded reproduction of productive forces — while removing only the extraction of surplus value. That promise is incoherent once we see that the dynamic itself, not merely its mode of exploitation, is what is ecologically unsustainable. Left politics after Marx cannot simply dream of accelerating production without owners.
