Clarke's first law: When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right; when he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong

A formulação está no ensaio “Hazards of Prophecy: The Failure of Imagination”, capítulo de “Profiles of the Future” (1962). Na publicação original era simplesmente “Clarke’s Law”; virou “primeira” quando a segunda e terceira ganharam status próprio na revisão de 1973.

A lei trata das falhas da imaginação técnica. Clarke argumenta que previsões pessimistas de especialistas sobre o que é impossível erram muito mais que previsões otimistas sobre o que é possível.

Clarke escreveu em 1973: “Já que três leis foram suficientes para Newton, decidi modestamente parar por aí”.
