5 Ways I Read More Than 50 Books Last Year
Mike Dariano went from reading a book a month to a book a week. This piece, a guest post on Mike Vardy’s Productivityist, lists five habits behind that change.

- Keep a “book buffet”: more books on hand (library, wishlist) than time to read them, mostly picked from other people’s recommendations rather than active searching.
- Quit books freely. Finishing out of obligation, the way people clean a plate, isn’t a reason to keep reading something that isn’t landing. Antifragile took him three attempts before it clicked; some books, like Seth Godin’s, never do.
- Stop measuring reading against what other people already know. He frames most people’s knowledge as full of the same gaps his own has, not a rare deficiency.
- Follow people who read and share what they read (Shane Parrish, Maria Popova, and others cited), functioning as an informal book club even without direct contact.
- Removing friction matters more than willpower: deleting Facebook from his phone, moving Twitter off the home screen, and batching email arrival times at 9:30 and 4:00 all free up moments that would otherwise go to feeds.
- Books compound: knowledge from one book resurfaces and deepens the next one on a related period or topic.
